No U-turns here, only Uberty – The Alphabet Series continues with Letter U

No U-turns here, only UbertyI can’t believe we’re almost at the end of the alphabet. I appreciate everyone who’s contributed so far, and encourage those who haven’t yet to jump in before we get to Z:)

This week’s letter U is a great example of Unity, and Mark Harai said it best when he said: “Great accomplishments are achieved by inspired, capable people who come together in Unity to work for a common goal.” And Mark gave a tip of the hat to Lori Gosselin for suggesting it first, saying “great minds think alike”. Indeed they do.

And this Alphabet Series has proven to be an exercise in Unity, as people have contributed the raw materials from which I created posts. You’re all to be thanked for providing words each week.

I’ve been challenged, entertained, stymied and motivated to include your suggestions, and I haven’t even had to Umpire (thanks Ana Isabel Canhoto, for your submission and for saying, “in a nod to your sports background, I suggest Umpire”).

And that’s because no one’s been Unctuous (tip of the hat to you Carolyn Nicander Mohr for that one), and to quote Bill Dorman, everyone’s been “undeniably brilliant with their utter awesomeness”.

And Bill is someone that many of us would say is Ubiquitous (thanks Tammy and Carolyn for that word).

In this article, “How to Become Ubiquitous” (like our pal Bill), Dorie Clark suggests some Unique (thanks Ralph Dopping) ways in which to stay top of mind, even when you’re away. Take a moment to zip over and read Dorie’s article above, then come back…I’ll wait:)

This series has required Uberty (John Trader, thanks for defining that for me as “abundant productiveness”, or fruitfulness and plenty), as there have been an Undeniably vast number of Uber-great words submitted.

Erin Feldman encourages us to “be Understanding when someone makes a mistake”, and Hajra Khatoon reminds us that “Ugly shouldn’t be a word to describe anyone, and how Unique is the word to describe every human.”

As Barbara Klein chimes in with her motto: “No U-turns here, up, up and away !”, and, although the space here and on the blogosphere is Unlimited (thanks Jason Fonceca for that), there is a limit to the number of U words submitted, so I will conclude with our Queen of Alliteration, Vidya Sury‘s submission:

“U, Kaarina are Unique, Ubiquitous
and Unsurpassed.

I love this Unusual and
Undeniably Utterly Uber-cool Ultra-interesting Unbeatable series.

I am Unabashed about being
Unable to Unmask my U-words yesterday. I hope you don’t take Umbrage at my
Unexpected absence and Understand, Unbiased.

Unbeknownst to me, it was an
Uppity Unaccommodating Ugly Ulcerous Unaffected Uneducated Unforgiving Undertaker of a
client. He ranted on – Unaware, Unchecked, Unbecoming, Uncensored, Unabated, Unadulterated,
Unable to stop his Unappealing Unarguably Unappetizing Unsavory flow.

Unconcerned, my team
Unanimously and Unceasingly Umpired Uniformly. Though Undesirable not Uncommon
for Us. Unsavory, Unacceptable. And Ultimately Unclear.

Not being Unctuous, but I am Unarmed except for my Uncle’s
Umbrella and before you get at me with an Uzi…I am off to play my Ukulele”.

Whew…U, You wore me out! Now bring on the V’s:)

    Vidya is amazing!

“V”? We’re getting to the tricky letters. Vitriolic is not something you want to be, but vigilant and victorious? Yes.

Thank you for linking to my post. :)

My pleasure @ErinFeldman:disqus , and thanks for the V words. Can’t wait to unveil the Turabbit again when we get to W. Cheers! Kaarina

         Me too! Nicely armored!

I agree Erin, “Vidya” should be one  of the “v” words!

      • http://www.vidyasury.com/ Vidya Sury

I snuck in today and commented. :D Sigh.

        • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

And I’m so glad you did @vidyasury:disqus . I look forward to the Queen of Alliteration’s submissions:)

      • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

It will be: the Queen of Alliteration has outdone herself on the V’s.

  • http://twitter.com/rdopping Ralph Dopping

Very nicely done. It seems we all tend to vanish a little in the summer months and for good reason. It’s nice to get away from the screen and pursue our other, hopefully outdoor, interests. It changes our visibility and helps to show us how valuable our lives are.

Getting out there and seeing the world helps to remove the vanilla that can creep into our lives and bring some variety to the flavour of our being. Even just sitting on the veranda can help you find other ways to verbalize you thoughts and change your view of the world.

I am hoping I wasn’t too verbose and used the proper vernacular suitable for this space. I know it’s my own special brand of voodoo (ouch) but I do enjoy this game very much. It brings some vitality to the ever so ordinary Monday.

And how can I forget the village? The community is what makes this so vital.

    Cheers!

Ah, I see you are chasing Vidya’s crown here @twitter-229922134:disqus : well played. Your V words will definitely make the victory lap in next week’s post. Cheers! Kaarina

There’s one v-word that’s really important in life:

          Vitality.

And then there’s one v-word that’s really important to Ryze:

Voluptuous (and it doesn’t just mean curvy :D )

          • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Vitality is one of those words that immediately conjures up an image of bursting health and vigour (another V word:). As to voluptuous…I am now challenged to thread that in:) Cheers! Kaarina

  • http://www.late-bloomers.net Barbara Klein

    Oah, something has gone viral?

Bella regina del benessere (could this be it?), thank you very much for the link to my blog. Your alphabet series is such a welcome change and challenge, an extra dose of a strong espresso with the right amount of brown sugar!

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Viral is a great V word @BarbaraKlein:disqus . And it’s my pleasure to link to your blog:) Just DM’d you about our Skype call too. Cheers! Kaarina

Great post Kaarina. Far be it for me to point out the obvious but we just can’t celebrate the letter “v” without mentioning the word “vocabulary.”  Often what defines the mark of a truly gifted writer, mastering vocabulary is key to rising above the noise and building a solid community of people who are anxious for the next post, the next article, the next commentary. Offer someone a chance to learn a new word or perhaps how to properly use a word they already know in a new context and they will be hooked on your content. Sort of like you do here on this blog!

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Thanks @M2SYS_Technology:disqus : great comment and much-appreciated compliment. Vocabulary is a wonderful word to kick off the letter V. It shall appear! Cheers! Kaarina

  • http://twitter.com/ericamallison Erica Allison

I LOVE this one! I haven’t submitted in a while, but had I jumped on the U train, it would have been Unabashedly as in ‘unabashedly focused on success’ or unabashedly happy to be doing what I do!

    Now, for a V word…vampy? :)
    Have a great week, Kaarina!

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Vampy…sounds like a great V word @twitter-135012379:disqus . Always great to see you, and I wish you a wonderful week too! Cheers! kaarina

  • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

Nicely done! I loved  ’s submission.

V is such a favorite. I had promised I would make it tougher for you as we move on but somehow my heart melts…. maybe because I am experiencing the 115 F temperatures…

But no time for silly vendettas; I promise to be nice and make it easy for you from now on…or whatever is left of it. Maybe because I value the online friendship so much and wouldn’t want to see myself banned from this lovely blog of yours. ;)

And v is definitely for victory… I know everyone else will mention that; but victory should be the first word we utter every morning…. :)

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Victory! That’s a fantastic word for V, @hajrak:disqus . And you know you’d never be banned from this blog:) How wonderful it is to have our online friendship: they are to be valued:) How’s that for another V word? Cheers! Kaarina

  • http://twitter.com/lifeforinstance Life, for instance

Well U did it Kaarina! I can’t think of one “V” word. I really like Veranda. It has a nice feel to it- not an aggressive business -building feel, but one of relaxation and communication.
If I can find a v word, I’ll be back!
    Lori

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Veranda’s a superb V word, and one I’m sure Ken Mueller will like. And relaxation and communication are both important for business, so they shall reside on the veranda too:) Cheers! Kaarina

  • http://twitter.com/bdorman264 Bill Dorman

Voluminous, but very entertaining. Fortunately, I was not a victim of visibility by being on vacation and was able to be fully vested in adding value to your virtual/social post.

You have done a great job with these and going forward my V word is victory, as in make sure you celebrate your successes. I will also add, value, as you need to bring value to every encounter you have; make the both of you better off through your contribution.

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

I’m making the Victory sign @twitter-34985693:disqus , and will work hard to ensure that Value is brought to the V post. With all the contributions, it will perhaps be a voluminous post. Cheers! Kaarina

  • http://newenglandmultimedia.com/ Michelle Quillin

Kaarina, your Alphabet Series has been so popular! What a great case study for adding a twist to a blog, and keeping readers coming back for more!

Your contributors must love the famous introductory speech in “V for Vendetta.” http://youtu.be/26h-H6CFO-A

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Oh my gosh, that knocked my socks off @michellequillin:disqus . What a PERFECT inclusion for letter V. I’ve never seen the movie, but this introductory speech will make @vidyasury:disqus , the Queen of Alliteration, and @twitter-229922134:disqus , competing for the crown, work extra hard. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. It’s a vertiable, voluminous vocab of V’s. Cheers! Kaarina

    • http://twitter.com/rdopping Ralph Dopping

Loved that movie! Every usable V work in 1:30 flat.

  • http://newenglandmultimedia.com/ Michelle Quillin

For a business-related “U,” I’m surprised no one said “USP,” or “Unique Selling Proposition”! What makes your brand unique from the competition? Find it, focus on it, capitalize on it.

For “V,” I’m going to go with “Value.” Today’s customer expects value for his or her dollar, but you also need to recognize your own brand’s value in the marketplace. If you don’t see your services as valuable, you’ll have a hard time sticking to your bottom line when a potential customer demands a bargain-basement price for a premium service.

Recognizing and appreciating the value of your services in the marketplace will help you discern who your client is — and who he’s not.

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Wise words @michellequillin:disqus , and yes, USP must have made a U-turn, haha! Providing Value and being seen as Valuable are critical to success in business. It will be interesting to play with those words in next week’s post, because LOTS of people say they provide value, but when pressed to define what that is, they often speak from a provider/producer mindset, not from a customer-centric viewpoint. Great words, and great advice. If we know the value we provide in the “eyes of the beholder” we can clearly identify, find and communicate with our target market. Cheers! Kaarina

    • http://ryzeonline.com/ JasonFonceca

       Hahaha! Michelle! USP rocks :P

    • http://www.vidyasury.com/ Vidya Sury

You’re right, @michellequillin:disqus ! Considering that USP is part of my daily vocabulary I am shocked I left it out. Talk about missing the obvious! :D

      • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Sometimes we miss that which is right under our nose:) Ah well, as I said…USP must have taken a U-turn, haha!

        • http://www.vidyasury.com/ Vidya Sury

          Indeed! :D

  • http://ryzeonline.com/ JasonFonceca

OMFG, Kaarina… I absolutely LOVE how fresh and trendy and sexy these alphabet posts are.

And I love having Unlimited thrown back at me :) Thx :D

Vitriole? What does that mean anyway? It’s a type of hatred, right? So, I vacuum that one up and instead submit vitality and vivaciousness. There’s the Vs have it.

Wow, that woman is creative!!! (Not to mention the owner of this blog.)

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

You are making my day even brighter, @soulati:disqus . Thanks for the V words, the impetus to get an e-book written/compiles, and your ever-inspiring spirit and presence. Thanks:) Cheers! Kaarina

You #rockhot @soulati:disqus . Your timing is impeccable, as I’ve just created a “Let’s Work Together” page, and creating an e-book makes perfect sense. Any how-to’s you can share, I’m grateful. xo

    Hey Kaarina,

Thanks for tipping me off about this series. I can see I have been missing a lot of Vaseline-free  Verbiage. Okay, a lot of your readers have already claimed many of the “V” words. I’m looking at you  @twitter-229922134:disqus

Did you by chance see the Woody Allen movie “Small Time Crooks”? Tracey Ullman plays Woody Allen’s wife, a former stripper with not a lot of class. When their business becomes a success, she hires Hugh Grant’s character to teach her about the finer things in life (foods, wines, art, etc.). She gets it in her mind that she can improve her vocabulary by working her way through the dictionary. They are at a party, but she’s only gotten through the A’s, when the hostess of a party she attends asks her how she liked a particular music performance, she gushes, “I just gotta tell ya, I thought the whole evening was apocalyptic. I was really agog!” Your clever blog posts series reminded me of that silly movie.

Good job with this, Kaarina. Much fun!

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Now I must go and hunt up a clip from that movie @twitter-16115105:disqus . It will probably work beautifully when I do a final A – Z wrap-up post of the top picks for each letter.

I’m not really sure how I’m going to get people engaged to vote/pick their favourite word from each letter of the alphabet posts.

Any ideas people? @twitter-223833082:disqus , you did something similar when you were choosing your logo. Any thoughts on how I’d do it here?

Thanks Judy, for dropping by. I like your newly named blog, and will return regularly. Love your writing. Cheers! Kaarina

  • http://www.wonderoftech.com Carolyn Nicander Mohr

Kaarina, you are definitely the Uber blogger! Nothing like a Vocabulary lesson to get writers involved!

For V, I suggest vapid and vacuous, of which you are neither, Kaarina! So I shall add verisimilitude, which is much more apt!

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Thanks for the great V suggestions and oh-so-kind words @wonderoftech:disqus :) Cheers! Kaarina

      • http://www.vidyasury.com/ Vidya Sury

Hugs! :D My only regret is missing the first few alphabets. I believe I came in pretty late. It is a fun exercise though. I set a timer and do this, you know? :D Usually manage in fifteen minutes – but I took half an hour today. Blame it on the sluggish mind!

        • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

I can’t imagine you EVER have a sluggish mind @vidyasury:disqus . And what a smart thing to do to set a timer! Never have regrets, my friend. I’m just glad you joined in the alphabet when you did. I’m not sure how I’ll do it, but I’d like to figure out a way to get people to “vote” on their favourite word from each letter, and do a round-up compilation post…The Alphabet in one sitting, so to speak.

          Any suggestions?

          • http://www.vidyasury.com/ Vidya Sury

A teaser post, announcing the grand round up and asking people to vote on their favorite word from each letter :-) . I wonder how much time it would take to make a tag -cloud-like visual so people can see it and just pick the word. I’d be happy to help compile that. :D

          • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

That would be amazing @vidyasury:disqus , and I’d be so grateful if you’d do that. Would you…really?

          • http://www.vidyasury.com/ Vidya Sury

Indeed I would. I can compile the list. But I wouldn’t know how to make the tag cloud. When do you plan to do the teaser post?

          • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

I think I’d probably do it when we get to letter X…seems appropriate:) Which means at least 3 weeks from now.

Does anyone know how to make a tag cloud?

          • http://www.vidyasury.com/ Vidya Sury

Just a thought –  let me compile the words and see. Could probably have 26 bullet points for the alphabets and list the words next to them. :D Longish post eh? That’s the easiest way. And easy for the voters too as they’ll just have to choose a word.

A tag cloud may be too confusing.  As a first step – let me round up the words. :D Then brilliant ideas will emerge.

          • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Yay! I.luv.U:) Thanks so much, my Queen of Alliteration:)
