This Is Not A Bucket List

This Is Not A Bucket ListMy friend Jayme Soulati recently wrote a post entitled “20 Things To Do Before I Die“, where she shared some really  interesting want-to-do’s, and then asked that the meme be passed from blogger to blogger.

Gini Dietrich promptly took up the challenge  by writing “The 10 Things I Want To Do Before I Die“.

Jason Konopinski then shared his “10 Things I Want To Do Before I Die“.

At first, I was reluctant to take on the challenge. I’ve never been much on making lists of what I want to do, because most of the time…I do them.

I lead a blessed life. For the most part, I do what I want, when I want, how I want to do it.

Now that doesn’t mean I don’t have responsibilities, deadlines, client expectations, a business to run and a household to maintain.

What it DOES mean is that, when I set my mind to do something, I usually do it.

So it took me some serious thinking to come up with things that are, what I call:

My Aspirations List

Not a bucket list. Not a to-do list. Not a “things to do before I die” list (although they might be difficult to do once dead…although, of course, I’m not sure about that either;)

And I like the concept of Aspirations…the act of aspiring…of breathing…of taking a breath.

So, in no particular order, here’s My Aspirations List (and yes, Jayme, it’s because you called me on it that I’m doing it:)

  • Live a long and healthy life so I can experience the rich, rewarding, healthy lives of my two sons and my husband, long into the future
  • Touch as many lives as possible and leave those lives a little happier, brighter, more confident and inspired than before I had the pleasure of connecting with them

Those two came easily. The following are the more “practical”, which I really had to think about.

  • Write my book. Ahem…FINISH writing my books…plural
  • Visit Finland, Land of the Midnight Sun and country of my heritage. Go for sauna (and it’s pronouned sownuh, not sawnaw:) and roll naked in the snow. I do that at home (yes, we have a good old-fashioned sauna and most of the time, lots of snow, haha!), but I want to experience Finland, snow…and beer:)
  • Drink 100 year old single malt. (Yes, I stole this one from Danny Brown, from his comment over at Spin Sucks. We’re birds of a feather on this one Danny.)
  • Meet Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman in person. I’ve seen them perform live more times than I can count, but I’d like to meet them, talk to them, hear their stories in person.
  • Spend one week in a silence-only environment: a retreat at which there is no speaking or sound, save for the sounds of nature.
  • Collect rocks and shells from all over the place. Oh wait…I already do that:)
  • Ride in a hot air balloon. I’m afraid of heights, but I will do this. It’s similar to when I went outside my comfort zone and learned to ride a motorcycle, was gifted with a bike for Mother’s Day one year, and rode with abandon for several years. Sold the bike a few years ago. It had accomplished its purpose.
  • Ramp up my speaking engagements. I used to do a lot of these. When I underwent a painful 2 1/2 years of TM litigation with my clothing company (which I’ve since closed down), my speaking engagements calendar went to a hot place in a handbasket. I yearn to ramp up this love of mine again.
  • Pursue my painting, sketching, jewellery design, photography and share the results with all who find it of interest

It’s not 20 or 10: it’s 13 Aspirations. And funny enough, 13’s my lucky number. How ironic is that?

Now it’s your turn. Will you share your bucket list, “things you want to do before you die” or Aspirations list below? I’d love to hear.

I did the same on my blog yesterday! And yes, looks like all of us do want to finish writing the book or at least plan to write one (or many!) some time!

    13, your lucky number? Interesting!

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

I must now head over to your blog @hajrak:disqus :) And yes, #13 is my lucky number, and a Friday the 13th is super lucky. That’s the day I went on my first date with my husband (then boyfriend) many, many years ago. Cheers! Kaarina

      • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

Oh you must; I actually made it 20 like @soulati:disqus challenged us!

Friday the 13th has been lucky for me twice; so no hard feelings against it!

I want to be like you before I die; how about that? That will be a life fulfilled, right?

           yes you:)

    • http://spinsucks.com Gini Dietrich

You say this to all the girls!

      • http://twitter.com/bdorman264 Bill Dorman

It’s a common theme isn’t it? I am the cutest one in the family, but don’t tell my sisters that………:).

  • http://soulati.com/blog Soulati

I love your aspirations, and at the end of the day each of our lists are exactly that. Mine launched in a different vein; thinking of the fragility of life, thinking of my sister and the legacy she didn’t stamp well (as her two boys are with me three weeks this summer).

And, you do know 13 is also my lucky number and how cool is that that 2013 is coming up? Maybe it’s the year we team up to accomplish a few of these things, or do I need to kick you in the bucket again??? Heh, just kidding.

Thanks for carrying the meme; what’s the coolest ever about this exercise is to allow your community to see you. As @BillyDelaney said to me at my house, “Ahh, now I see you.”

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Thanks for the kick in the bucket @soulati:disqus : it was an interesting exercise for me, and it was eye-opening to see how others picked up on the theme. I truly enjoyed your post: I believe that by sharing the “me”, the “we” becomes stronger.

I like the idea of 2013 holding some collaboration in store for us. Let’s start plotting and planning, mwahahahaha. Cheers! Kaarina

Kaarina, you definitely know how to live. And I mean that in the philosophical sense.

I didn’t realize you were a speaker, too! Do you have a list of speaking topics anywhere on your website? You need to get that book done, get it up here on your website, and then hit the road and teach people how to live. Your message rings so true with me — I need people like you to keep preaching!

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Thanks @michellequillin:disqus . When I (finally) stopped resisting posting my prices/services, I originally had a tab for Speaking, but removed it. I won’t go into the specifics of the “why”: suffice to say, like my services, IRL I’ve always customized to the audience, so didn’t really ever create a list of topics. However, as I’ve learned, it’s important online to have something tangible listed, even though I resist that right down to my toes.

Generally speaking, my speaking gigs often centre on “inside-out” self-actualization and self-improvement, offering concrete actionable steps to DO, and often drawing on my Olympic experiences and athletic examples.

But you’ve brought up a good point: I need to revisit the “why” I didn’t post my Speaking services, and rethink it…and DO it. Thanks for the feedback. I’m a Renaissance woman living in a digital age, and, with all humility, I like what you say about me knowing how to live, in a philosophical sense. That makes my heart sing. Cheers! Kaarina

      • http://newenglandmultimedia.com/ Michelle Quillin

Several friends of mine are trying to build careers as speakers, and have found that having lists of topics available has helped them get sponsors. Actually, now that I think of it, I need to do the same! I’ve spoken at several social media conferences and meetings — why am I not posting this as a service? It never occurred to me until just now.

See how good you are for me, Kaarina? Haha!

I’m looking forward to seeing what you decide to do!

        • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Yay! We’ll be comparing notes soon @michellequillin:disqus , as I’ve decided2do:) Cheers! Kaarina

  • http://cirquedumot.com/new-readers/ Susan Silver

I really dig that so many people took up this challenge. I am not surprised that so many of use want to go on and write novels. Someone told me to look up no plot, no problem. I also signed up for NaWriMo’s camp happening next month. I am really dedicating myself to get that fiction novel finished.

I also did my bucket list over at cirquedumot

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

Thanks for letting me know @ssilver:disqus : I’m heading over to read your list now:) Cheers! Kaarina And bravo on dedicating yourself to the completion of your novel. I’m going to do the same!

When I read @hajrak:disqus ‘s post I thought well, this is easy, I will compile this list in two seconds, well, that was two days ago …

But there is one thing I will definitely put on this list, stay tuned!

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

My current aspiration list is to write a list of aspirations. The motorcycle sounds like fun. I want to ride one, but I am afraid I will still ride like I am 20 and…

    • http://markharai.com Mark Harai

I have a need for speed too Jack : o

That is one reason I wouldn’t ride one either at my age..,.

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

I will look forward to reading your list of aspirations @TheJackB:disqus . You KNOW the song I’m going to link to about the motorcycle riding…it never gets old http://youtu.be/rMbATaj7Il8

I love your list, Kaarina. I usually do whatever I set my mind to and I am conscious of what I write down. I made a bucket list long ago  – wait – I just checked – and interesting, saw that I wrote that post on July 10, 2011.  I would write a more focused list now.

    • http://twitter.com/KDillabough Kaarina Dillabough

You should write a “then and now” post @vidyasury:disqus :) Letter X appears today! Cheers! Kaarina
